Lunch with a Lovebug

by Kayte

Brody and I joined the kids at school today for lunch with our little lovebugs. They were thrilled to see Daddy, who doesn’t get to come to as many school events as I do because of work. I made the kids a special lunch of heart-shaped sandwiches, watermelon and strawberries and Daddy brought them ice blended chocolate shakes – a super special treat!

Sushi Saturday

by Kayte

Today was a day of driving around Los Angeles and errands. The kids seem to enjoy being out and about on the weekends: given the choice they always want to stay out rather than go back home. Today we gave them the choice to go home for lunch or eat at a restaurant, and the answer was a resounding “Restaurant!” We ate at a sushi restaurant and snapped some silly pictures, which reminded me of this silly photo series of the boys at another restaurant, which ironically just happened to be almost exactly (how’s that for an oxymoron?) two years ago.

Christmas Cookies

by Kayte

Today Grandma organized sugar cookie decorating for the family. Max and Lola did a great job spreading frosting and shaking sprinkles on their cookies, although an equal amount of both probably went into their mouths too 🙂

We picked up Max’s glasses today and he’s also been great about wearing them (knock on wood). While they were waiting for the glasses to be ready, Max and Lola made an impromptu visit to the fire station to donate a board game to the Spark of Love Toy Drive.

Molasses Cookies

by Kayte

Since Lola had a fever yesterday afternoon, and school requires 24-hours fever free to return, we had to keep her home today. The ear drainage had pretty much stopped and she wasn’t acting too sick, so we baked my favorite cold-weather cookie: my grandma’s molasses cookies recipe. Lola did a great job measuring and rolling. The cookies turned out pretty good, but not as good as when my mom makes them. Guess we’ll have to keep practicing.

Thanksgiving Prep

by Kayte

Max and Lola had the entire week off school for Thanksgiving break, so I enlisted them to make desserts for dinner tomorrow. Lola helped me with the apple pie – rolling dough, measuring ingredients, stirring sauce, and taste-testing apples. Max helped with the pumpkin cheesecake – measuring ingredients, cracking eggs, mixing, and taste-testing the batter. I hope everything tastes as good as it looks!

Pull-Apart Pizza Bread

by Kayte

Max and Lola have been enjoying a subscription to Highlights Magazine (courtesy AuntieK) for a few years now. The preschool edition includes a recipe each month, so tonight we commissioned the kids to make dinner for us. They had a great time both cooking AND eating.

Chopsticks

by Kayte

Max was rocking the kiddie-chopsticks at lunch today. He didn’t even need us to show him how to use them. Mad fine-motor skills!

Lola helped me with Thanksgiving prep today. She did a great job measuring ingredients and counting scoops. Max just helped lick the beaters.

It may not be apparent from the pictures, but Max is actually quite good at scooping and navigating the spoon. He sure loves his oatmeal.

Mother’s Day Sushi

by Kayte

Today was a great Mother’s Day! Brody made breakfast while I snuggled in bed with the kids. We had nice FaceTime chats with our long-distance moms. Max & Lola gave me chocolates and hand-made cards. And we all went out together for a sushi lunch.

At our last wellness visit the doc said Max & Lola were old enough to eat raw fish, and we’ve been wanting to try it ever since. I was surprised how much they both liked it. Lola at least tried everything, and Max absolutely chowed. He even stole a piece of sushi off my plate while I wasn’t looking! They ate edamame, miso soup, tempura vegetables, shrimp, spicy tuna, California roll, salmon, pickled ginger and more. It was a very enjoyable lunch outing.

Plates

by Kayte

The latest step in trying to civilize our little rugrats is getting them to use plates. Well, not so much use as to NOT throw their entire meal onto the floor in one go. I’d been avoiding plates for that very reason, until a friend told me her son actually made less of a mess when he ate off a plate (vs. high chair tray). I thought it was worth a try.

Max seems ready for it. He is much more focused when eating off his plate and much less messy. We just have to keep a close eye so he doesn’t put too much food in his mouth at once. Lola is working on it. When she wants to eat she does a good job, but when she’s done I have to move quick to catch her plate before it hits the floor.

Now if we can just pair plate skills with utensil skills we’ll be in business!

Brussels Sprouts Ice Cream

by Kayte

I haven’t used my baby cookbooks in awhile, but I’ve always wanted to try this recipe. I finally had all the ingredients (and some time) on hand so today was the day. I thought it turned out pretty good. Kind of a savory ice cream, not too sweet with just a hint of the Brussels sprouts, apple, apricot and cinnamon. My mom said I was mean for sneaking vegetables into ice cream 🙂

Orange Smiles

by Kayte

The oranges on our tree are ripe, plentiful and delicious. We’ve been enjoying them almost daily. Max & Lola still have a hard time with the tough membrane, but they love sucking out the juice!
