The First Supper

by Kayte

Max & Lola will be 6 months (corrected) tomorrow which means we can start solid foods! Their first meal was very runny rice cereal with breast milk. They both did great. Max was a little unsure at first, pursing his lips against the spoon, but then he got the hang of it and started opening his mouth for each mouthful. Lola attacked her first bite like a shark! Brody couldn’t shovel it in fast enough.

9 Months

by Kayte

We had the best day today. Brody’s friend Ric is in town, so we decided to go on an adventure. All five of us hopped in the car (with me in the back between the two car seats) and we drove over the canyon road into Malibu. We ate lunch at the Reel Inn, where there were two other sets of twins – 2-1/2 yrs and 8 mos. The 8-month-olds were ridiculously big, but we’re getting there! After lunch we drove to Santa Monica and played on the beach. Max & Lola felt the (freezing) ocean for the first time and got some sand between their toes. Such a fun day.

Synagis

by Kayte

Told ya diaper timing make all the difference. Went in for Synagis today (which is a weight-based dose) and Max was 15lb 7oz (half a pound more than last week!). Lola was a less dramatic 12lb 5oz. Those are some big dirty diapers…

Pulmonologist

by Kayte

We had a follow up appointment with the pulmonologist yesterday – he signed off on Max & Lola! No more oxygen, meds, or appointments. The doctor said lung-wise they’re just as healthy as normal babies. We’re really whittling down our doctors list. Besides the ophthalmologist in February, it’s just the pediatrician and some yearly follow-ups. And lots, and lots of weekly therapy.

He also said that while we do need to continue to be vigilant about germs, we can continue to do so on more of a common-sense level, not a neurotic NICU level. That being said, about 50% of all preemies end up back in the hospital during their first year home and we definitely don’t want to be part of that statistic. That means lots and lots of hand washing. The most important thing is getting through the first winter, especially with the crazy flu I hear is going around. I’ll be counting down the days until spring!
