Eastern time zone style. Happy New Year!

Trike & Fly

by Kayte

Everyone spent some time playing with their new toys today. Max & Lola got a “new” [used] trike and took a spin around the block.

My mom got a remote-controlled airplane and we spent some time trying to figure it out. After a few crashes in neighborhood we had better luck at the park. It went pretty high!

Saturday we headed to Pasadena to check out the Kidspace Children’s Museum. There were lots of fun, educational exhibits that included painting & art, a trike track, the Physics Forest, nature & bugs, climbing structures, and lots of outdoor space. Adults and children alike had a fun time exploring.

The big attraction this weekend was Snow Days LA. Kidspace had a couple tents full of snow set up for the kids to play in. Lola thought it was great fun, but Max wasn’t so sure. The out-of-towers were totally weirded out. As my mom pointed out “only in LA is snow museum-worthy.”

LA Zoo Lights

by Kayte

Friday night we bundled ourselves up, grabbed some hot chocolate, and headed to the LA Zoo for a walk through a lighted wonderland. The animals were asleep but the lights were blazing. It was fun being out with the kids after dark – something we don’t do too often. We were a bit underdressed though – temps had dropped down to the 40s by the time we left which is super chilly for LA. We realized the kids don’t have appropriate winter attire and will be going glove shopping this weekend!

Christmas 2014

by Kayte

We spent a nice Christmas day at home with Grandma, Grandpa, and Uncle Paul. This was the first year Max & Lola really understood what was going on, and boy were they excited to open some presents. They had been [mostly] so good about leaving everything under the tree this past week. Max opened his favorite gift first and was totally uninterested in anything else, but Lola had lots of fun tearing into everything.

The rest of the day we played outside, watched football, and cooked. That night we had a great dinner with family and friends. Merry Christmas to all!

Sweet Smell of Christmas

Family has landed! Reading my favorite childhood Christmas scratch-and-sniff book before bedtime.

Eight Nights

by Kayte

We had a lot of fun celebrating Chanukah this week. Max & Lola really got into the swing of things. They helped to light the candles (even though Lola wanted to sing “Happy Birthday” every time we did it). They received toddler-friendly dreidels (aka large-sized aka not-choking-hazards) and practiced spinning them. Max got pretty good by the end of the week. And they ate their way through a pouch of gelt (chocolate coins). I’m really looking forward to celebrating this holiday with them as they grow up.

Holiday Party

by Kayte

We had our annual Christmas party with our fellow NICU grads. I think we’re getting the hang of this playdate thing. A year ago our get-togethers were completely hectic, but the last few have been downright pleasant.

OK to Wake

by Kayte

It’s been one month since Max started sleeping in his toddler bed. During that time we’ve experienced total destruction of the nursery, walked down the hallway 1,000+ times, and seen the sun come up much more than we’d like. Finally, after month of sleep deprivation, things are settling down a bit, thanks in part to our new OK to Wake clock.

The OK to Wake clock lights up at a parent-set time in the morning, telling the child when it is okay to get out of bed. When it arrived we showed Max & Lola their new clock, and explained to Max that he needed to stay in his room until it lit up. He was super excited to have a new toy. We set the clock for 6am and hoped for the best.

The first night I think we talked up the clock a little too much. Max was so excited that he was up multiple times per hour starting at 2am. Ugh. Zzzz. Worst night of sleep yet.

The second night was better. Max didn’t wake up until 5:58am. We quickly put him back in bed and told him to wait for the clock to light up. When it did, Max stayed in bed for about 5min, then got up.

Day 3 Max woke up at 4:45am. We put him back in bed and he slept until 5:30am. Got up a few times between 5:30am and 6:00am.

Day 4 Max woke up at 5:37am. We escorted him back to bed a few times until 6:00am.

Finally, on day 5, Max slept until 6:23am! It felt like sleep heaven. The next few days he continued to get up after 6:00am. It is amazing how good uninterrupted sleep feels.

Rockin’ Around

by Kayte

We got our Christmas tree this weekend. Max & Lola had a blast [literally] running around the tree lot. They even got to meet their first Santa.

Max & Lola helped hang lights and decorate the tree – 4 broken ornaments later :/ A little different experience than years past, but it sure smells good in our living room.

2 Going on 12

by Kayte

Agh Max got a haircut today and he instantly looks 10 years older. It’s crazy. He was long overdue though, and it will grow back to a shaggy, curly, toddler mess in no time.

Nana Bah has been in town helping with the kids. It’s a huge help to have a second set of hands when we go on outings, and around the house when I’m trying to get chores done. The kids love hanging out with their Nana.

Rainy Day LA

by Kayte

Yay! After months and months of drought we’re finally getting rain! Oddly enough, because last winter was so dry, this is the first time Max & Lola have really experienced/been aware of the rain. So far so good – puddles and umbrellas both get a thumbs up in their book.
