Preschool Homework

by Kayte

Max & Lola had their first homework assignment for preschool this week. The theme of the week was “Physical Me” so they were sent home to decorate “Me Dolls” in their own likeness.

Max & Lola picked all of the colors/materials, tore & glued paper, and even cut with scissors! Max asked for a “baseball shirt” but I think he ended up looking more like a soccer player.

My Pants Falling Down

by Kayte

This past week Lola has absolutely refused to wear a diaper at bedtime so we finally took the plunge and let her go diaper-free overnight. It’s been a huge success!

The only problem is that those bulky cloth diapers were apparently the only thing keeping Lola’s pants up. Now that she’s au natural they immediately fall down around her ankles after a couple steps. After many cries of “my pants falling down!” I finally pulled out my sewing machine and altered all of her PJ bottoms. I took out about four inches from each 2T-sized pair – that is one tiny waist!

Mission accomplished!

Let Me In!

by Kayte

Max & Lola were so excited to go back to school after the weekend. Some tangible things I’ve noticed already:

  • Lola is able to pull down her own pants to go potty (they work on potty training/self-help in class)
  • Max has been saying “please” and “thank you” unprompted (not sure if this is preschool or three years worth of drilling into his head finally sinking in)
  • They both come home singing snippets of random songs (“days of the week“)

First Week of Preschool

by Kayte

Max and Lola had a great first week at school. I dropped them off on the second day and they didn’t even give me a backwards glance. They sang songs, read books, played outside, and painted pictures. There are only four kids in the class right now (including M&L) with two teachers, so it’s a nice slow start. More students will join the class as the year goes on (as other kids turn three and graduate from county services), up to a maximum of ten students. Looking forward to the year ahead!

The kids did great. I sobbed. Guess they are more ready than I am.

Cousin Sleepover

by Kayte

This weekend Cousin Booker joined us for his very first sleepover. Max was overcome with excitement and the two boys caused a ruckus while Lola did her thing. Temps soared over 100° all weekend so we were a little cooped up, but overall it went great. We can’t wait to have Booker back again sometime!

My Hair Had a Party

by Kayte

Auntie Karen sent us a Trout Fishing in America music CD and Lola can definitely relate to one of the songs…

My hair had a party last night
It musta got into a terrible fight
Cause when my head hit the pillow it was lookin’ alright
My hair had a party last night

Summer Cram

by Kayte

Summer Cram: Attempting to pack in as much fun as possible into the summer before the school year starts. Usually occurs near the end of summer.

This is Max & Lola’s last week of summer vacation before they start preschool next Tuesday. We’re trying to make the most of it while we can. We had a play date with our NICU buddies, enjoyed lunch with friends, and today went to the playground. It’s also been hot this week so we picked a park with lots of shade and we got there early. We were having a great time and would have stayed longer except an aggressive squirrel ate all our snacks, and Lola had to pee.

Slides & Swings

by Kayte

Max and Lola have been asking to go to the farmers market lately so we took them this morning. They each got to pick their own activity before we shopped. Max chose the GIANT space shuttle slide that went so high I couldn’t even see him climbing. Lola wanted the swings. They were both perfectly content with their individual choices and one didn’t get jealous while the other was doing their activity. It’s good to see their independent personalities shining through.

Dental Cleaning

by Kayte

Max and Lola had their 6-month dental cleaning today. They both did a great job cooperating with the dentist as she buffed, rinsed, and suctioned. Best of all Max & Lola loved it (especially the balloons!) and have been obsessively brushing their teeth at home.

What do you expect with a producer for a father and an accountant for a mother?

Potty Trained

by Kayte

I am officially declaring Lola potty trained! About a month ago she started fighting diaper changes and asking to go on the potty instead. After a few days of this I finally just switched her to underpants. Lola had a few accidents along the way (of course), but she caught on quickly. She’s now been accident-free for 2-1/2 weeks (#1 and #2!) and tells us when she needs to go. She still needs help getting her pants up and down so it’s not totally hands-free yet, but at least I’m washing diapers half as often. I’ve also still been putting her in a diaper overnight (a good night’s sleep takes priority over potty training any day) but she wakes up dry every morning and holds it until we get to the pot.

Max has been pretty disinterested throughout the whole process, and when given a choice (diaper or underpants?) he tells us “I like my diaper.” He’s starting to fight diaper changes too, though, so maybe he’s not too far behind.

MRI Results

by Kayte

We met with the neurosurgeon today to discuss the results of Lola’s most recent brain MRI. When compared to her last MRI (December 2013) the ventricles are smaller and the cysts still deflated. All great news! The further we get from her last surgery without incident, the more likely we are to be in the clear without any further complications. They will do another MRI in one year, and if that looks good we will probably only check in with them every-other-year.

Swim lessons are done for now but we’ve been spending lots of time in our own pool during these hot summer days. The kids are nowhere near water-safe yet, but they are much more comfortable in the pool: moving their bodies, blowing bubbles and going underwater. I’m even able to take them both in the water by myself (with floaties, of course). A dip in the pool is a nice mid-week treat when Brody is at work. (Pics below from the weekend when Brody was home.)

Morning Hike

by Kayte

It has been so hot here in the afternoons that we made a point to get out early today to enjoy the cool morning air. Nothing like a little hike at Tree People to rejuvenate our activity level: it inspired us to ride our bikes to the park later AND go swimming in the pool that afternoon. A fun, active day from start to finish.
