Baby Steps

by Kayte

Lola had a nice, quiet night last night sleeping on her belly. They did another chest x-ray this morning and while it wasn’t vastly different, the official radiologist report did say that it looked overall slightly improved. We will take any baby steps we can get in the right direction. Things have been calm today.

One of Lola’s lung cultures came back positive from the lab with a staph infection, which is common for already-weakened lungs. The antibiotics she’s on should cover it, and they’re starting a second MRSA antibiotic just to be on the safe side. Increasing feeds to 40cc/hour. Slowly but surely decreasing the amount of oxygen support she requires. Still on the sedative but she comes out of it every once in awhile feisty as can be. The doctor wants to try a different type of CPT called Percussion Ventilation; it’s a machine that hooks up to the vent and delivers fast-paced vibrations inside the lung to try to break up the mucus.

The RT today predicted that Lola will be intubated for at least another 2-3 days. Looks like we’ll be here for the long haul (7-14 days) fighting this thing off, but at least it seems like now we’re heading in the right direction.

So grateful to hear that there is improvement, even if it is slight. At least she is going in the right direction. We have many people praying for you and are confident that things will only get better. Glad that your dad is there to help. I am sure that is a big relief. Love to you all.
